In November 2006, South Korean designer André Kim staged “Fashion Fantasia: Angkor Watt” against Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temple complex in Siem Reap. The presentation was described as the first fashion show to use the ancient UNESCO World Heritage site as its backdrop, transforming one of Southeast Asia’s most important Khmer architectural and religious landmarks into a theatrical runway for Kim’s highly stylized eveningwear and wedding gowns. The spectacle formed part of the Angkor-Gyeongju World Culture Expo, a 50-day cultural event built around the theme “Ancient Future: The Myths of the Orient,” which linked Khmer civilization with Korea’s Silla heritage.
