Before his psychedelic silk prints became symbols of Capri glamour and 1960s jet-set fashion, Emilio Pucci was an Italian Air Force captain and SM.79 torpedo-bomber pilot during World War II. His wartime connections placed him dangerously close to the Fascist regime: Pucci became a confidant of Edda Mussolini, Benito Mussolini’s eldest daughter, whose husband, former Foreign Minister Count Galeazzo Ciano, was on trial after participating in the 1943 removal of Mussolini from power. Pucci became involved in an extraordinary attempted bargain involving Ciano’s papers, which contained highly critical material about Mussolini. The plan was to give the documents to the Gestapo and use them to negotiate Ciano’s life, but Adolf Hitler vetoed the scheme.
