On October 4, 2011, Karl Lagerfeld transformed Paris’s Grand Palais into a gigantic theatrical seascape for Chanel’s Spring 2012 ready-to-wear show. Instead of presenting the collection against a conventional runway backdrop, Chanel installed oversized sculptures of stingrays, seahorses, sharks, anemones, and coral branches in matte, glossy, and glittering finishes. The models moved through this manufactured ocean wearing iridescent whites, creams, nudes, metallics, pinks, corals, and blacks, with accessories shaped like seashells, conch shells, and coral. Seaweed-like panniers and sponge-inspired ruffles extended the marine fantasy into the clothing itself, while Florence Welch performed “What the Water Gave Me” live and Stella Tennant closed the presentation.
