On 22 May 1967, catastrophe struck À L'Innovation, one of Brussels' largest and most fashionable department stores. The five-storey complex, housed partly in a 1901 Art Nouveau building designed by Victor Horta, contained approximately 24,000 square metres of retail space and 8,000 square metres of warehouses. More than 1,000 shoppers and employees were inside when the fire began at about 13:30. Its central atrium and skylight created a chimney effect, rapidly drawing flames through wooden floors and walls; within roughly ten minutes, much of the store had become an inferno. The building had no sprinkler system or comparable active fire-protection installation. Thick smoke blocked the main staircase, some people leapt from windows before fire ladders arrived, while others escaped across rooftops into neighbouring buildings. Several employees reportedly hesitated because they had grown accustomed to fireworks being set off by protesters outside.
