On 4 April 2023, at the height of Ramadan preparations for Eid al-Fitr, a massive fire tore through Bangabazar, one of Dhaka’s major clothing markets. The blaze was first reported at 6:10 a.m. Bangladesh Standard Time and rapidly consumed the densely packed commercial complex, destroying 3,845 shops and damaging surrounding properties. Many traders had invested the previous year’s earnings in new seasonal stock intended for the Eid rush; although some managed to remove merchandise, thousands lost everything. Dhaka South City Corporation estimated the damage at Tk3.03 billion, approximately US$28.5 million, while traders placed the losses as high as Tk10 billion, or about US$93.9 million.
